Steps to Set Up an IV Drip:
1. Gather Equipment:
• IV cannula (correct gauge)
• IV fluid bag (e.g., Normal Saline)
• IV giving set (IV tubing)
• Alcohol swabs
• Tourniquet
• Adhesive tape or cannula fixator
• Sterile gloves
• Needle disposal container
2. Wash Hands and Wear Gloves:
• Maintain aseptic technique throughout the procedure.
3. Prepare the IV Fluid and Set:
• Check the fluid bag for expiry and leaks.
• Hang the IV fluid bag on a stand.
• Remove the IV tubing from its package.
• Close the roller clamp on the tubing.
• Spike the IV bag port with the IV tubing spike.
• Squeeze the drip chamber until it is half full.
• Open the roller clamp to flush out air from the tubing and then close it.
4. Select and Prepare the Vein:
• Apply the tourniquet above the chosen site (usually the forearm or hand).
• Palpate for a suitable vein.
• Clean the insertion site in a circular motion with an alcohol swab and let it dry.
5. Insert the IV Cannula:
• Hold the skin taut.
• Insert the cannula bevel-up at a 15–30° angle.
• Once blood appears (flashback), advance the cannula slightly, then slide the catheter in while holding the needle in place.
• Remove the needle and dispose of it safely in a sharps container.
6. Secure the Cannula:
• Release the tourniquet.
• Secure the cannula with adhesive tape.
• Connect the IV tubing to the cannula.
7. Start the Infusion:
• Open the roller clamp to allow fluid to flow.
• Adjust the drip rate as per instructions or prescription.
8. Monitor and Document:
• Check for signs of infiltration, leakage, or discomfort.
• Document the procedure (time, site, fluid type, rate, and patient response).
