In this 10-hour practical workshop, we teach you how to build a simple and understandable model in Excel in accordance with the advanced measurement standard of Basel III. We analyze and quantify the risks of operational events for a banking or financial institution, and structure the distributions to run a Monte Carlo simulation in Excel with IziRisk. No software other than Excel and a free download of IziRisk is required. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is at the heart of this course. It is the methodology used to bring quantitative analysis to life. Everything will be done with workbooks loaded with Excel macros provided by IziRisk. You will learn how to structure the model, run the simulation, interpret the resulting information, make decisions, and evaluate risk mitigation strategies. With this course, we hope to dispel myths about quantitative risk analysis. Using simple software on top of Excel, with applications coded with macros, it is possible to build an introductory quantitative risk management model according to the Advanced standard proposed by Basel. Furthermore, we also hope to have justified why we do not recommend qualitative risk analysis given the enormous limitations and weaknesses of this misnamed “methodology” of heat maps.

Objective:
To lay the foundations for understanding, structuring, defining, executing, and analyzing the results of a Monte Carlo simulation process applied to operational risk models of a financial institution or project. We explain what Monte Carlo simulation consists of, how the main probability distributions are defined, how the different components of the model are defined, how the frequency and severity or impact functions are intertwined, how the simulation is executed, and finally, and most importantly, how the simulation results are interpreted and analyzed. The latter is done in order to understand the quantitative monetary dimension of risks, define mitigation strategies, and understand decisions in a context that incorporates uncertainty.
