“While claiming to remain a regional defensive alliance, NATO has constantly sought to reach beyond its traditional defense zone and scope, strengthen military and security ties with Asia Pacific countries and played up China's threats. Such moves call for high vigilance among regional countries.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“China is always a force for regional and global peace and stability. On hotspot issues, we have actively promoted peace talks and sought de-escalation. NATO should think hard about what role it has played in maintaining security in Europe. I would like to stress that the Asia-Pacific is not a battlefield for the geopolitical contest and does not welcome the Cold War mentality and bloc confrontation.”

“(We) hope to see more efforts that serve regional stability and prosperity rather than introduce geopolitical conflict and bloc confrontation into the Asia Pacific. STORYLINE:
China on Wednesday criticized NATO for labeling China a threat and for expanding its military ties to Asia after NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned of a security threat posed by China’s growing assertiveness and collaboration with Russia.

“NATO has constantly sought to reach beyond its traditional defense zone and scope, strengthen military and security ties with Asia Pacific countries and played up China's threats,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters at a daily briefing.

“The Asia-Pacific is not a battlefield for the geopolitical contest and does not welcome the Cold War mentality and bloc confrontation,” Mao said.

The comment is a response to Stoltenberg’s speech Wednesday at Keio University in Tokyo, in which he addressed China’s military buildup that lacks transparency, including increasing investment in nuclear weapons, and escalated coercion of neighbors.

Mao also commented on Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s warning about a risk of conflict in the region, reiterating her country’s commitment to regional stability and “steady” development of relations with Australia.

On Tuesday, Wong called on major powers to manage competitions “responsibly” to avoid “catastrophic” conflicts in the region as she prepared for defense talks with her British counterparts that would possibly discuss China’s military expansion.
