This is an instructional video with 5th graders writing Historical Fiction, by http://WriteStepsWriting.com. Students are learning and practicing the Writing Core Standards W.5.3 and W.5.9 and the Language Core Standards L.5.1 and L.5.2. The teacher is using a WriteSteps lesson to guide 5th graders into planning and organizing their writing. First, she models the use of a graphic organizer to help her class think about choosing and researching a Historical Fiction topic. Next, she shows two examples of student writing to teach students how to incorporate the 6 Traits into their pieces.

As part of this lesson, the teacher also shows students how to use their social studies textbooks to understand the context in which their fictional characters live.
