A centuries-old tradition that transcends borders is brewing in Salt Lake City — one that’s less about caffeine and more about connection.

Coffee readings, also known as tasseography, is an ancient practice across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Balkans that has long served as a way to spark conversation and reflection. And for Isil Hessick, who goes by Ishelle, it’s a cultural ritual she carried with her from Istanbul to Utah 24 years ago.

“We have a saying that if you share a cup of Turkish coffee, you’re committed to a 40-year friendship,” she said.
