It is an honour to represent the Hunter and to stand as Australia’s first Special Envoy for Men’s Health. The facts are confronting. Three in four suicides are men. Four in five heart deaths under 65 are men. Ninety-five per cent of workplace deaths are men. More than 3,500 men die from prostate cancer every year. Behind every statistic is a father, a son, a mate. Men are dying too young, and we have to do something about it.

This role is about getting the conversation started and backing it up with real action. Labor is investing $32 million in men’s health, supporting grassroots programs, Men’s Sheds, Healthy Male, Movember, TradeMutt, TIACS and many more. We are funding new campaigns, research and training so men can get the care they need when they need it.

But this is not just about government. It is about all of us. As blokes we need to check in on our mates, talk about what is going on in our lives and take our physical health seriously. Heart checks are free on Medicare. Prostate checks are now just a simple blood test. Testicular checks can save lives. Even ED can be a sign of something bigger, and it is nothing to be embarrassed about.

If we can talk about footy, fishing and fixing the car, we can talk about our health. It is not weakness to open up, it is strength. Let’s make it normal for men to see a GP, to get the tests, to have the conversations and to look out for each other.

This is not a political issue. This is about saving lives, protecting families and building stronger communities. Together we can turn the numbers around and make sure more men live longer, healthier lives.
