Wildlife Protection Act 1972
Protected areas or conservation areas are locations which receive protection because of their recognized natural, ecological and/or cultural values. 
Biosphere Reserves are not part of Protected area network.
National Parks and Wild Life sanctuaries come under the category called "Protected Areas".
Protected Areas = declared under Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
WPA,1972 provides for 4 types of protected areas :
Wild Life Sanctuaries,
National Parks,
Conservation Reserves and
Community Reserves.
Difference b/w National park and Sanctuary : No human activity is allowed inside a national park, while limited activities are permitted within the sanctuary.
In Biosphere Reserve, limited economic activity (sand and stone mining) is permitted.

Schedule I and part II of Schedule II provide absolute protection - offences under these are prescribed the highest penalties.
Species listed in Schedule III and Schedule IV are also protected, but the penalties are much lower.
Schedule V includes the animals which may be hunted.
The plants in Schedule VI are prohibited from cultivation and planting.
