In this video, we are demonstrating two processes for robotic deflashing on composite material utilizing 3M abrasives. Some footage increased in speed for playback purposes.

Our Proof-of-Concept Lab gives customers the opportunity to see their manual material removal processes automated with robotic tooling. Before arriving at our facility, pictures of the parts and even video of the manual process are reviewed to get an understanding of the project requirements. Then our application engineers decide what tooling would be needed to efficiently produce the customer's desired finish. Typically, an active or passive force compliance device, servo spindle, and specific abrasives/tooling are selected before the parts arrive. With only a few days of programming, engineers onsite dial in each application process and adjust the parameters to obtain 50-80% of the part’s final finish. This includes force, spindle speed, feedrate, abrasive/tooling. If a larger abrasive or higher force is required, we have a full suite of PushCorp equipment to quickly pivot and switch to tooling with more power. We also work with several abrasive manufactures that stock our lab with premium products that can be tried if our initial selection is not a good fit.

The output from the lab is a full report listing the parameters used throughout the demo as well as a video of the robot's paths. The goal is that this "recipe" will allow integrators to focus on the other aspects of the system and reduce the time it takes for the delivery of the automated system.

For this week's lab our customer wanted to know if their composite deflashing process could be automated.
