The Croatian capital Zagreb has again been rocked by explosions only a day after rebel Serbs hit the city with cluster bombs that killed five people.

At least five explosions, two loud ones and three smaller ones, occurred in the city centre just before noon local time.

Once again it was panic in Zagreb city centre as people ran for cover and air raid warning sirens sounded again over the city.

Locals sought sanctuary in makeshift shelters, dreading further explosions.

They are the lucky ones, those caught out in the open stood no chance.

Dazed survivors were helped out of bombed buildings.

At least one missile struck the Academy for Dramatic Arts.

Yesterday's (Tuesday) Serb attack on the city was in apparent retaliation for a Croatian army offensive on Monday and Tuesday that seized a wedge of Serb-held territory about 100 kilometres southeast of Zagreb.

A rocket also fell on the suburb of Zitnjak, some eight kilometres from the city centre.

One old woman and a child were injured in the attack.

Police were called in and sealed off the area to check for any unexploded bombs.

Altogether 16 rockets have hit the Croatian capital since yesterday and people are wondering if this is just the beginning of a sustained attack by the Serbs.
