I think this is my second time covering this song, actually! I played this game a lot as a kid, so it’s nice to revisit an old and familiar soundtrack. All the Mario Kart games have fantastic soundtracks that work really well with my style, and this one is no exception.

The concept for this cover originally started off as the idea: “What could I do with only a saxophone?” I originally recorded this arrangement a few months ago with all the parts played on tenor. After recording it, I listened back and thought to myself that there was a lack of drive or forward motion to the cover. At that point, I decided to ditch the “only saxophone” idea, and add some drums to this arrangement! That really made this tune a whole lot better, and the part was a ton of fun to play, as well! Lastly, I purchased a bari sax back in May, and decided to re-record a few of the tenor parts that were playing the “bass voice”, with the part shifted into a more bari-friendly register. After all these changes, I think that this is the best version of this arrangement that I’ve been able to come up with! I opted for a Lucky Chops / Too Many Zoos vibe in the mix, so I compressed things a lot more than I usually do - saxophones don’t only play gentle smooth jazz, you know!

Let me know if you liked this format! I think it would be fun to experiment with videos similar to this one in the future with a saxophone-only ensemble or perhaps this saxophone+drums style.
