Archive footage shows the moment Prince Charles and Princess Diana presented their son to the world on the steps of St Mary's Hospital, 31 years ago.

The birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first child was announced amid scenes reminiscent of his royal father's arrival 31 years ago.

Archive footage shows the moment Prince William was first introduced to the nation on June 21, 1982.

Like his son, the Duke of Cambridge was born at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, breaking with the tradition of Royals being born in the palace.

Prince William, who weighed 7 pounds 1.5 ounces when he was born, was first seen on the steps of the hospital accompanied by his parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana. His name was announced a week later on 28 June by Buckingham Palace as William Arthur Philip Louis.

The Prince was baptised in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace on 4 August 1982 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie.
