🧾 Lecture Summary:
🔹 Topic 1.3 – Dimensions of Physical Quantities

📍 Introduction:
This lecture explains how dimensional analysis is used not only to check the correctness of physical equations but also to determine the dimensions and powers of unknown physical quantities.

📍 Finding unknown dimensions:
Using the principle of dimensional homogeneity, an unknown quantity is treated as a variable with unknown dimension. By comparing the dimensions of all terms in an equation, the unknown quantity is identified as acceleration with dimensions LT⁻².

📍 Deriving a relation using dimensions:
The lecture demonstrates how wavelength is assumed to depend on Planck’s constant, mass and velocity. Unknown powers of these quantities are introduced and determined by equating the powers of mass, length and time on both sides of the dimensional equation.

📍 Determination of powers:
By solving the resulting system of equations, the powers of Planck’s constant, mass and velocity are obtained and the dimensional form of Planck’s constant is confirmed as ML⁻²T^⁻¹.

📍 Important clarification:
Dimensionless constants must not appear in dimensional equations.

📍 Dependent and independent variables:
The lecture explains how wavelength (λ) acts as the dependent variable, while the remaining quantities are independent variables. The nature of direct and inverse relationships is discussed and the role of dimensions in determining the powers of variables is highlighted.

📍 Clarification about book approach vs real physical reasoning:
In this lecture, it is also clarified that although the textbook treats all variables as directly related while applying dimensional analysis, in real physical situations scientists already know the nature of the relationship (direct or inverse) by understanding how independent variables affect the dependent variable. Dimensional analysis is then used mainly to determine the correct powers and to ensure dimensional consistency of the derived formula.

📍 Conclusion:
Dimensional analysis is an effective tool for checking equations, identifying unknown dimensions and determining the correct powers of physical quantities in physical relations.
