Formosan rock macaques have been getting up to no good in Kaohsiung lately, resulting in three monkeys ending up behind bars. The city’s department of agriculture recently set up traps in Gushan, after residents complained that monkeys were harassing them and their businesses. But experts say there are better ways to coexist. Let’s hear more.

The Department of Agriculture set the traps because of complaints from residents, who said the macaques were being disruptive. But instead of luring them with food, people should just avoid leaving snacks and garbage out in the open in areas where there are monkeys.

Macaques are a common sight at Shoushan Zoo and National Sun Yat-sen University. But their stomping grounds now extend as far as Linhai 2nd Road. Experts say that instead of trapping monkeys in cages, it’s best to remove food and trash from the street, so that macaques have no reason to roam the city.
