In Indian mythology, it is said that it is the descendant of Lord Shiva and the concubine Uma.

印度的神話中說其為濕婆神及烏瑪女神之子，以統率父親大自在天兵軍眾，故稱為Ganapati，Gana 意為眾會、軍眾、群聚，pati為主人、支配者之意；又因其具象頭，世人依相呼名，有時俗稱「象鼻天」。
