Wild rose is the common name of certain flowering shrubs: Any wild members of the Genus Rosa (see List of Rosa species) (Rosaceae), or, more especially: Rosa acicularis, "wild rose", a rose species which occurs in Asia, Europe, and North America.
The botanical term for wild rose is "species rose", which means just what it says — a species that occurs naturally, with no help from man — a true "wildflower." There are over 100 of these worldwide, some native to North America, many from the Orient and Europe.
Two similar-looking native wild roses come into flower in June – the Dog Rose Rosa canina and the Field Rose Rosa arvensis.
The dog-rose (Rosa sp.) is a scrambling shrub, found in hedgerows, woodland edges, on sand dunes and grasslands. It is the most abundant of our native, wild roses, with sweet-scented pink or white flowers that appear in June and July.
