Diesel Particulate Filter | Skill-Lync

Описание к видео Diesel Particulate Filter | Skill-Lync

You might have seen dark black smoke coming out of industrial and vehicular emissions. The black colour is due to the presence of particulate matter, also called ‘Soot’ particles.

These particles are formed as a result of improper combustion and they are very minute and suspended. The carcinogenic nature of the particles results in health hazards and they contribute to global warming as well.

For controlling the emission of the particulate matters, Diesel Particulate Filters(DPF) are used.

In this video, we have explained what DPF is, its need and its working.

DPF is a honeycomb monolithic structure consisting of a number of cells in it. The walls of the cell have pores in it and the alternative cells are blocked at one end and open at the other end. When the exhaust enters the DPF, the gas passes through the pores and leaves, whereas the soot particles get deposited in the DPF itself.

The continuous deposition of soot particles may block the DPF and to avoid this, the soot particles should be continuously cleaned and the process of removal of soot is known as regeneration.

Regeneration processes are of two types - Active and Passive.

If the regeneration occurs due to the intervention of Powertrain Control Module, then it is said to be Active Regeneration. On the other hand, if the regeneration occurs automatically due to engine working conditions, by adding additives to fuels or by adding oxidation catalysts to DPF, then it is said to be Passive Regeneration.
