Atrocitus' rage after the massacre in his space sector made him always feel a deep hatred for the Guardians, as well as the entire Green Lantern Corps for working for them. After this horrible tragedy, Atrocitus' "holy hatred" gave rise to the power of the first Red Lantern, and he established himself as such. Atrocitus prefers to intimidate or recruit those of lesser strength than him, as he feels more powerful and stronger with each new member to reinforce his troops and achieve his goal of killing the Green Lantern.
