After recovering from hangovers in Mellenor, the party split up to pursue various tasks while Cyran worked on deciphering the Divine Codex. With Renzo's help, Cyran successfully translated four riddles pointing to temples in the Deadlands, Millstone, and Stonewood Castle. However, during their discussion, Renzo revealed knowledge he shouldn't have possessed, the name of Cyran's Mother , Amethyst exposing him as an imposter. The fake Renzo, a changeling cultist spy for The Dark One, admitted to replacing the real Renzo during a distraction and revealed that the genuine Renzo was being held captive in a lab near the Deadlands alongside Professor Varrington. After interrogation, the changeling identified herself as M and claimed she had a family to return to. The party decided to bring her along on their journey to the Deadlands as a temporary replacement.
After purchasing a carriage and traveling for ten days, the party arrived at an abandoned church on the outskirts of the Deadlands. They stealthily cleared the church of undead and discovered a hidden basement containing catacombs. In the depths, they found both Renzo and Professor Varrington, Renzo chained to a table and the professor unconscious but alive. After freeing them, M taunted Renzo by shifting through various forms, including his own, prompting Renzo to punch her. Professor Varrington awoke in a panic, exclaiming that his magic was gone, adding a new complication to their mission.
