Maurice O'Callaghan, author, lawyer and filmmaker, was guest speaker on the 12th October 2014, at the official opening of the redevelopment of the historic site of the Kilmichael Ambush in West Cork which occurred on the 28th of November 1920, when Tom Barry's Flying Column struck a major blow for Irish freedom by defeating a heavily armed unit of the Auxiliaries of the British Army. One of the most important historical battle sites in the world, the redevelopment was undertaken by the Kilmichael Historical Society, the Kilmichael and Crossbarry Commemoration Committee with assistance from the West Cork Development Partnership.
