In this emotional and hard-hitting address, Winnie Byanyima, wife of detained opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, breaks her silence on what she describes as a deliberate and dangerous political plot behind her husband’s imprisonment.
Byanyima alleges that President Yoweri Museveni is using state power, the military, and the justice system to silence Dr. Besigye because he opposes what she claims is a long-term plan to extend Museveni’s rule through his son. She warns Ugandans that the country is entering a critical period marked by abductions, torture, enforced disappearances, and the criminalization of opposition leaders.
She raises serious concerns about Dr. Besigye’s health and safety, revealing that he has been denied bail, fallen ill under unclear circumstances, and is being guarded by military intelligence rather than ordinary prison warders. Byanyima says it takes negotiations just for his doctor to access him.
Speaking in her personal capacity as a wife and citizen, she says she fears for her own safety but has chosen to speak publicly because visibility is her only protection. She calls on Ugandans and the international community to pay attention, insisting that silence only enables abuse.
