Once upon a time in ancient Vietnam, there lived a boy named Mai An Tiêm, adopted by the king. Despite his good nature, he was envied by others at court. They falsely accused him of arrogance, claiming he said his wealth was due to his own efforts, not the king's favor. Believing the accusations, the king banished Mai An Tiêm, along with his wife and children, to a deserted island.

On the island, life was hard, but Mai An Tiêm was determined to survive. One day, he found mysterious black seeds washed ashore. He planted them, and with time and care, they grew into large, sweet fruits with green rinds and red flesh—watermelons.

Mai An Tiêm realized the fruits could sustain his family and decided to carve messages into the watermelons' rinds, sending them back to the mainland via the ocean. When the fruits were discovered, people were intrigued and came to the island to trade for them. This brought prosperity to Mai An Tiêm and his family.

Hearing of this, the king realized Mai An Tiêm’s wisdom and resourcefulness. He pardoned him and allowed the family to return home, celebrating Mai An Tiêm’s resilience and the lesson that hard work and determination lead to success.

Thus, the watermelon became a symbol of perseverance and gratitude in Vietnamese culture.
