Antonino Buenaventura - Twilight by the Sea - Song without Words (1929)

Geraldine Gonzales (piano)
------------------

This lyrical piece by Antonino Buenaventura is reminiscent of Mendelssohn's "Songs without Words." The song-like lyricism in "Twilight by the Sea," coupled with the gentle flow of an accompaniment that is made up of arpeggiated and chromatic 16th notes, played alternately by the left and right hands, strongly shows his being influenced by European Romantic composers. This piece is set in the placid and gentle key of G-flat major and is cast in ABA form that culminates in a technically challenging conclusion characterized by rapid parallel 32nd note figures.
