This is a messy brain dump with some ideas about craft versus art, commercial versus creative/literary fiction, how to tell if your writing is bad, and more.

But I kept going in circles, in part because of the language - what people mean when they talk about good or bad writing isn't always the same. I think what most people think is important (prose) is actually pretty useless, and story (plot) or drama (meaningful conflict) is what's actually important. You can have "great writing" and still end up with a terrible book.

I also realized, after doing nearly a hundred first chapter critiques, that while this is exactly the main issue most authors continue to struggle with (because there's never been resources like mine before), the discussion doesn't really matter, because no matter whether you're trying to write creative literature or commercial fiction, the "bad" is nearly universal (a boring story readers don't care about).
