Falling from a cloud, war comes in the name of the Doctor.

The 2013 theme is an interesting one. With new titles for The Snowmen came a new theme that's something of a hybrid (pun intended) of a new mix of the 2010 theme but a new arrangement, namely a beefed up baseline, some aggressive drums, a few more synths in the melody and the orchestration stripped back to the brass section only. It's by far Gold's darkest mix on the theme tune. Another mix came, almost paralleling the 2008 versions, with drums paired down a notch, some tweaks to the new synths and the strings and woodwinds of the 2010 theme reintroduced but only alongside the main melody onwards. Again, it's that first version that stayed in my head, there's an aggression that really suited where Matt Smith's Doctor would end up by the 50th anniversary. In a way, I feel like it's as much a theme for John Hurt's Doctor as it is Matt Smith's.

Like with my 2008 arrangement, I wanted to find a middle ground between those two mixes, capturing that raw energy of the Christmas version while including the fuller orchestration for the rest of series 7b. As a fun twist, I've snuck in some of the orchestration from the BBC Proms 2013 version, my favourite bits being the string and flute run in the opening bars. Sadly, this version of the theme was never formally released so it remains consigned to the titles which they accompany. Lucky for me I can do things like this and give this theme a much deserved middle eight!
