Did you know around 45,000 Spaniards fought in German uniform on the Eastern Front in WW2? The formation was known as the Blue Division (División Azul), the 250th Infantry Division on the Eastern Front with its commander Agustín Muñoz Grandes. They were mostly stationed at the Leningrad Front. They held their ground and one of their biggest battles was the one at Krasny Bor in February 1943. Their deployment ended in October 1943. The last ones returned in the spring of 1944. As Germany was losing the war Franco's regime did its best to distance itself from the Axis Powers. Over 2,000 Spaniards would continue to fight in the Blue Legion till 1944. From then till the end of WW2 over 100 volunteers would continue to fight in 101st SS Spanish Volunteer Company and saw action in the Battle of Berlin. In total an estimated 5,000 Spaniards had been KIA and 20,000 WIA. Around 500 were POWed by the Soviets.
