Now that we're in February, I will be posting a lot of Chinese-related content since Chinese New Year is coming up!!!

Back in 2018 while randomly scrolling around the internet, I found an article about a few Chinese communities in the Sacramento Delta, and became interested in visiting the area.  After a solo trip up north (to Weed, CA, but that's another story), I decided to check out Locke since it was on the way back home anyways.  Little did I know, my visit to Locke would change my life.  I've always had an interest in Chinatowns, but this experience really propelled me into a full blown Chinatown enthusiast!  

The Chinatowns of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, most notably in Locke, Walnut Grove, and Isleton, represent a unique chapter of American history where Chinese immigrants built autonomous rural communities far from the urban bustle of San Francisco. Unlike city Chinatowns that grew within existing municipal frameworks, Locke is distinguished as the only town in the United States built entirely by Chinese people for Chinese people. Established in 1915 after a fire destroyed the Chinese section of nearby Walnut Grove, the town was constructed on land leased from George Locke, as the Alien Land Laws of the time prohibited Asian immigrants from owning property. During its peak in the 1920s and 30s, these towns were bustling hubs for the thousands of laborers who reclaimed the Delta's marshes into fertile farmland, featuring a dense network of gambling halls, herb shops, speakeasies, and Chinese language schools.

Today, these settlements serve as "living museums," preserving a weathered, atmospheric aesthetic defined by narrow alleys and two-story wooden buildings with overhanging balconies. While the populations have dwindled—Locke now has fewer than 100 residents—the cultural footprint remains vivid through sites like the Dai Loy Gambling House Museum and the Jan Ying Association. Visitors to the Delta can still walk the levee-side streets of Walnut Grove's Chinese Historic District, which was rebuilt in the 1930s with distinctive Art Moderne flourishes, or visit Isleton's Bing Kong Tong building. These towns stand as resilient monuments to the "Sons of Zhongshan" and other immigrant groups who transformed the California landscape while navigating systemic exclusion.
