Howonquet Village in Del Norte County sits where the Smith River flows into the Pacific Ocean, offering peaceful river vibes and rugged coastal beauty. Managed by the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, it features RV camping and a resort with various stay options.

If you're camping like we did, aim for prime spots by the estuary. Interestingly, despite most salmon fishing closures in California this year, the estuary remains open for fishing. Guides and local CDFW officials confirmed it's a great spot for salmon fishing in 2024.

A few tips: If you're bringing an RV, it must be under 20 years old, and you need to be the registered owner. The website is undergoing a redesign, so book over the phone—the staff gave great tips, including recommending the waterfront site.

Hiking trails and unbeatable scenery await, with elk, bald eagles, and seals commonly spotted. Pets are welcome, but leashes are required.

Lucky 7 Casino is nearby for more entertainment.
