“Es is ein rose entsprungen” by Michael Praetorius which we recorded recently especially for this series of videos. "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen" is a German Christmas carol whose first known publication was in 1599, with a popular harmonization by Michael Praetorius published in 1609. The programme note for Praetorius's version would highlight its significance as a Marian hymn, symbolic of the Virgin Mary, and reference its origins in medieval imagery of the Tree of Jesse, a symbol of Christ's lineage. The note would explain the hymn's lyrical theme, which connects a prophesied rose to the birth of Jesus, and mention how later verses were added to focus on the "fragrance" dispelling darkness.

Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen
aus einer Wurzel zart,
wie uns die Alten sungen,
von Jesse kam die Art
und hat ein Blümlein 'bracht
mitten im kalten Winter,
wohl zu der halben Nacht.

2. Das Röslein, das ich meine,
davon Jesaja sagt,
hat uns gebracht alleine
Marie, die Reine, die uns das Blümlein bracht.
Aus Gottes ewgem Rat
hat sie ein Kind geboren
und bleib doch reine Magd.

3. Das Blümelein so kleine,
das duftet uns so süß;
mit einem hellen Scheine
vertreibt’s die Finsternis,
wahr‘ Mensch und wahrer Gott,
hilft uns aus allem Leide,
rettet von Sünd und Tod

Translation:

Behold, a Branch is growing
Of loveliest form and grace,
as prophets sung, foreknowing;
It springs from Jesse's race
And bears one little Flow'r
In midst of coldest winter,
At deepest midnight hour.

Isaiah hath foretold it
In words of promise sure,
And Mary's arms enfold it,
A virgin meek and pure.
Thro' God's eternal will
This Child to her is given
At midnight calm and still.

This Flow'r whose fragrance tender
With sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor
The darkness ev'rywhere.
True Man, yet very God;
From sin and death He saves us
And lightens ev'ry load.
