For decades, fleets have spec'd and managed around a familiar truck tire truth: in tire design, gains in one area usually meant compromises in another. Mileage could be extended, but often at the expense of traction. Rolling resistance could be lowered, but durability sometimes suffered.

Today, commercial truck tire development is pushing past those boundaries. New approaches in compounding, casing design, and tread geometry are allowing engineers to deliver improvements in all three areas at once. The aim is to deliver on all fleet demands: longer mileage, better fuel efficiency, and stronger traction.

“The strategy is about bringing as much value to end users through innovation,” explained Joe Hughes, marketing manager for On-Road at Michelin. “We try to break down those natural compromises in tire design to get you more miles, better traction, and better rolling resistance all at the same time.”
