Part 2 of 3 The Episcopalians
CORRECTION:
James Hervey Otey
We're discussing the beginnings of formal African American education in the U.S. colonies through the Church of England. This includes education of both free and enslaved people. Such education is enshrined in the 1606 Jamestown, Virginia, charter, which requires colonists to share the Gospel with Black people and Native Americans. More specifically, the presentation includes the 1621 first Anglican baptism of a Black person in the colonies; major organizations and acts that fostered education; and the education provided by such church workers as Samuel Thomas in South Carolina, Thomas Bacon in Maryland, Elias Neau in New York, and Thomas Bray throughout the colonies, including in Williamsburg, Virginia.
