The names “Sheng-chun Huang” and “Hsueh Lo-yi” may be familiar to those who have kept a close eye on Taiwan’s indie film industry. With close to 30 documentary shorts to their names combined, their Sundance-nominated “Afterlife” proves to be a must-watch for those who are interested in complex but visually-soothing storytelling. In an exclusive chat with TaiwanPlus, Huang reveals how they came up with the concept for filming a veteran tomb-maker’s life and death. “This film is dedicated to Jintaro, we wanted to talk about the connection between the living and the dead.” But more than that, it’s about the cemetery itself as well, “We also wanted this film to touch on issues that currently exist at Nanshan Cemetery.” Watch to find out more, and why Huang highly recommends a trip to the cemetery.
