On the 1st of July 1916 William (Billy) McFadzean of the Royal Irish Rifles sacrificed his own life to save the life of his comrades by throwing himself on top of a pile of grenades after one that had been ignited was accidentally dropped. His body took most of the explosive impact and he was killed instantly.
His, quick thinking and selfless sacrifice saved the lives of dozens of his comrades. Billy was posthumously awarded the VC.
