If you're a job searcher, poor little Okoloko's experience is a reminder of why you shouldn't listen to advice from non-experts.

The amount bad job search advice that's freely given by otherwise well-meaning non-experts is alarming.

How many of these have you come across, or worse, actually put into practice?

👎Putting the job description at the bottom of your resume in tiny white font to increase your chances of getting in front of the recruiter. I keep bringing this up because for several years now, this piece of advice from job search hell keeps popping up like a pimple. For so many reasons, primary of which is that the ATS doesn’t work that way, and you’ll be seen as trying to game the system, please don’t do this.)

👎”Shoot your shot.” If you’re a newbie, please don’t apply to a mid-level or senior-level role. It doesn’t show gumption. On the contrary, it shows that you’re not reading the job posting or just outright ignoring it and you’re adding to the hiring team’s work.

👎”It’s a numbers game. Just keep applying.” While you do have to hit your metrics, applying to everything and anything isn’t effective. In fact, you’ll find yourself a victim of the Law of Diminishing Returns.

👎”Use auto-apply bots”. These tools not only clog up the hiring system for everyone and reduce response rates for you. They also submit irrelevant applications with embarrassing errors that can damage your professional reputation.

👎The fancier your resume, the higher your chances of getting an interview. There are no points for fancy graphics, charts and non-traditional fonts on your resume. Not even for those of you who are graphic designers. Save the fancy-schmancy for your design portfolio. When it comes to resumes, it’s always the content that counts. A resume that meets the key requirements of a job and shows your relevant quantified accomplishments is the one that will get through, even if it’s a plain Word doc with no bells and whistles.

Here's how to vet someone before accepting their advice:

1. Check Their Credentials. Do they have a background that aligns with your goals? Always ask for proof of expertise.

2. Ask for Success Stories. A person with a track record should have tangible examples of how their advice has led to positive outcomes. Don't be afraid to request case studies or testimonials.

3. Seek Recommendations. If someone has consistently helped others in their career journey, it's a good sign they can do the same for you.

4. Listen to Your Gut. If something doesn't feel right or if their advice contradicts common sense, think twice before following it.

If you found this advice helpful, give it a thumbs up and share it with your fellow job seekers.
