This video explains the challenges and solutions in measuring the surface temperature of aluminum billets and wheel grooves in extrusion and casting environments. Infrared pyrometers are optical devices that measure the temperature of surfaces in their direct line of sight. When one object blocks another, the pyrometer reads only the visible surface — which is critical when targeting wheel grooves or the billet itself.

To measure groove temperatures, the pyrometer is aimed slightly above or below the aluminum rod’s recess, focusing on the steel wheel surface. For accurate measurement of the aluminum billet at the exit point of the wheel, a multi-wavelength A5-EX pyrometer is recommended.

Low-temperature models like the EX-5A are ideal for measuring the temperature of aluminum during solidification stages (40°C–500°C), with a practical minimum reading of around 160–180°C for solid aluminum. However, measurements can be distorted due to reflections, oxide layers, or variable emissivity on different billet surface areas. Furthermore, the motion of the conveyor and the presence of molds or gaps can result in inconsistent readings if not properly accounted for.

For accurate results, it's crucial to position the pyrometer between 2 to 5 meters from the molten aluminum, with targeting at around 1.5 meters. If the customer requires measurement from below the profile, the scanning system may face alignment and visibility challenges, making it hard to identify the exact spot being measured. The resulting readings could include side surfaces or mixed areas, especially with narrow profiles, which could lead to unreliable data.
