Bulwer's Pheasant / Burung Bekia [malay] (Lophura bulweri), also known as Bulwer's wattled pheasant, the wattled pheasant or the white-tailed wattled pheasant, is a Southeast Asian bird in the family Phasianidae endemic to the forests of Borneo. It is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. Monotypic. Adult male Dark blue with brighter feather fringes, bright cobalt-blue wattles, laterally compressed white tail. Adult female Plain rufous-brown, no crest. Immature Buff tips on coverts. HH Slope specialist, lower montane primary forest, often near rivers, 500–1,200 m, occasionally to 1,500 m. Nomadic in search of fruiting trees. Voice Described as a loud, harsh crow-like bek kia and penetrating metallic kook kook, also a soft, monotonous gak. Status Endemic, formerly common but now probably rare submontane resident, patchily distributed in foothills and adjacent lowlands from S Sabah to C Sarawak and W, C and E Kalimantan, apparently absent from extreme S and SE Kalimantan (no records within 200 km of east and south coasts). Bulwer's pheasant belongs to the order Galliformes, in the family Phasianidae. The genus name Lophura is derived from the Greek word lophos for ridge, crest or tuft. The species name bulweri is after Sir Henry Ernest Gascoyne Bulwer, Governor of Labuan 1871–1875, who presented the type specimen to the British Museum. Bulwer's pheasant is endemic to the island of Borneo. While the species is locally common in protected areas (e.g. Kayan Mentarang National Park, East Kalimantan) it is rarely found elsewhere. The bird inhabits hill and lower montane tropical forest, likely preferring highland rainforests and rarely visiting the lowlands below an altitude of 300 metres .
