Malic acid is an organic compound made by all living organisms. It is used as a food additive to enhance the sweetness or tartness of juices, sodas, candies, and other foods.

Malic acid is also used in cosmetics to adjust pH as well as medicines to help in various skin conditions and other maladies.

For this test, SWECO was tasked to determine the maximum flow rate of a multiple deck separator with specified mesh sizes.

As with many powder applications, malic acid contains agglomerated product that if broken apart would be product in spec. The vibration of the separator often is enough to deagglomerate materials, but in this case, the malic acid needed a little more help. Thus, a SWECO Powder Wheel was added to the separator.

The Power Wheel is a top-sided cleaning device that helps to break up any agglomerates on the screen while cleaning the screen mesh, which increases the flow rate and the efficiency of the process.
