The Vortex flowmeter OPTISWIRL 4200 has been developed for SIL2 and SIL3 duty in safety-related applications. The instrument tests all safety-related functions in less than half a minute. It is therefore certified for all applications from "low-demand mode" to the so-called "continuous mode", the highest specified operating mode. This means that it can be used to monitor the flow in practically all safety-related applications. In the standard version, it fulfils SIL2 approval. In the redundant version, the so-called dual version, it can also be used in SIL3 applications with only one process connection. This example shows the air consumption measurement of atomising air in a rotary kiln. Here, the waste from a chemical process is burnt. The waste is being distributed in the rotary kiln by means of an atomiser lance. It is important that atomising air is continuously blown in during burning so that the combustible material can burn steadily and comprehensively. The risk in this application is that the atomising air is interrupted. This would have the consequence that the material to be burnt can no longer be burnt completely, when a high concentration of carbon monoxide would be produced and there is a risk of the rotary kiln exploding. The safety device in this application must therefore ensure that atomising air is blown in permanently during operation of the rotary kiln. As soon as this is no longer guaranteed, the supply of liquid waste must be stopped immediately. Here, the OPTISWIRL 4200 is used to monitor the atomiser air, which can measure atomiser air extremely reliably due to its measuring principle. This is just one of the many possibilities for the use of the OPTISWIRL 4200 in providing reliable flow data monitoring in safety applications.
