Maxine graduated with a nursing degree from the University of Calgary in 1993. Maxine was a public health nurse in Calgary for 13 years, where providing a face to face contact with new families soon after discharge is a standard of care. During her time in public health, she observed feeding challenges to be a major concern for most families. She became passionate about lactation support and attained the International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant designation. Maxine noticed many mothers with preterm infants discharged from the NICU with the intention to breastfeed.

In 2016, Maxine made the transition to working at the Alberta Children’s Hospital where she works primarily in the NICU. She supports dyads discharged from the NICU to outpatient clinics including respiratory, cardiac, eating, feeding and swallowing clinic and pediatric units. She is passionate about providing early support to help NICU dyads meet their feeding goals. Maxine also provides in hospital nursing education and orientation on lactation, and mentors new LCs.
Maxine sits on numerous committees working on lactation and feeding policies and procedures for Alberta Health Services. Furthermore, she volunteers on provincial and national breastfeeding committees. Maxine completed her Master of Nursing degree which focussed on the association of breastfeeding at 6 months and parental leave policies in OECD countries.
