About the Raga JHINJHOTI

Raga Jhinjhoti, is a melodious Raga of Khamaj Thaat. Jhinjhoti is a sweet raga, full of emotion and feeling. In a lighter form it includes both Gandhar and Nishad as Komal and Shuddha swaras. However, the old compositions, Dhrupad/ Dhamar/ Khyal are known to have the following melody structure.
In Aaroh, Gandhar is used only like - ,P ,D S R G m G ; and not otherwise. But in Avroh, Gandhar is a resting note like - S' P D m G ; R P m G ; m G ; m G R S ,n ,D ,P ,D S;.

According to Pt V.N.Bhatkhande, Jhinjhoti is regarded as a light raga. Nevertheless it is practiced in both dhrupad and khayal tradition by vocalists as well instrumentalists. Furthermore, the raga is commonly used in semi-classical genres of tappa and thumri.

Since all the seven notes are used in the raga, its Jati is Sampoorna or heptatonic. The most important and prominent note in this raga is the 'Ga' which is called the Vadi swar and the Samvadi swar or the supporting note is 'Dha'.

The raga structure is more prominent in the lower octave and hence the improvisation of this raga is mostly done in the Mandra and Madhya Sthaans. The nearest Raga is Khambavati. Being originally a late night Raga, the songs based on this Raga are very intense and soulful and full of self-pity.
