Описание к видео Herbert C. Jackson - Long Time No "C" - A Rare Visitor Returns to Duluth!

Here is a sight for sore eyes! It's the Herbert C. Jackson arriving in Duluth, Minnesota in the early morning hours of June 13, 2025. She was loaded with limestone she loaded at Stoneport, Michigan and Meldrum Bay, Ontario to discharge at the Hallett 5 dock in West Duluth. After unloading, she would depart Duluth empty and make her way to Marquette, Michigan to load taconite pellets. This video covers the Jackson's entrance through the shipping canal and passage under the Aerial Lift Bridge. We then catch up with her again at Rice's Point where we see her pass under the John A. Blatnik bridge as she makes her way over to the Hallett 5 dock.

This is the first time I've captured the Jackson in Duluth since April 2021, so it was nice to finally capture her again after four years. The Jackson had been an occasional visitor in the past, making 4-6 trips to Duluth a year, but that seemed to stop back in 2022. I think the only visit she made in 2022 was to briefly visit Fraser Shipyards for a repair, then she hasn't visited Duluth until now. Unfortunately, it appears the only reason we got a visit from the Jackson this year was due to the Hon. James L. Oberstar's grounding in the St. Marys River. The Jackson was filling in for a run that the Oberstar would normally be doing. (The Oberstar has been in dry dock at Fraser Shipyards for a month now, so her bottom damage from grounding must have been pretty extensive.)

We didn't get a salute for the Jackson's arrival, but she would end up saluting on departing... so stay tuned for that video coming in the near future! Fortunately, the rain held off for most of this video, as the combination of wind and rain is not fun when trying to make a video. The raindrops started to fall as the Jackson passed Rice's Point, but fortunately we had already gotten a good look at her by that point. We'll get an even better look at her during the video of her daylight departure.

Launched in 1959, the 690-foot Herbert C. Jackson was the second-to-last lake carrier built by the Great Lakes Engineering Works of Rouge River, Michigan. (The last was the Arthur B. Homer, sister ship of the Edmund Fitzgerald.) The Jackson has sailed under the same name for the same company her entire career. Her four cargo holds are serviced by 19 deck hatches, allowing her to carry 24,800 tons of cargo. Her steam turbine was replaced in 2016 by two MaK-6M32E diesel engines, giving her 6,250 horsepower. According to the Boatnerd website, the repowering reduced emissions of "particulate matter by 35 percent, carbon dioxide by 57 percent and sulfur oxides by 63 percent" to make the Jackson more environmentally friendly.
