I’m going to tell you about by far the greatest gold discovery ever made on planet Earth. There is no other mining district that even comes close. From not long after its discovery in the 1880s, it led the world in annual gold production every single year for over a century. It wasn’t until 2006 that another district overtook it and produced more in a year. Of all the gold ever dug by man, this gold district has produced 1/3rd of it! It’s a story of intrigue and suspicion, war, strange government officials who didn’t want gold to be found, and geologists to this day still disagree on how they were formed. It’s a story pretty much like no other. So let me tell you about the largest gold deposit in the world, the famous Witwatersrand deposits of South Africa.
