The Common Flameback is a small beautiful woodpecker with a golden back and three toes on each feet. The males have a red crest while the females have a black crest with white streaks. To prevent injury to their brain during pecking, woodpeckers have a long tongue wrapped around the back of their brain. They also have extra plates of spongy bone around their skull to help absorb and distribute the shock.

Beside pecking at tree trunks and branches for food, woodpeckers also peck to make cavities in them for nesting or roosting. When a woodpecker abandons its cavity, other cavity-nesting species of birds will be able to make use of these ready-made holes too. Woodpeckers are an important part of the ecosystem. They build and contribute to the natural habitats of other birds. Hence, it is important to take care of the woodpeckers as well as the environment in order to protect all the birds.
