For the opening of the season this coming Thursday, IPO Principal Trombone Nir Erez interviewed Ray Parnes, who was Principal Trombone of the orchestra for forty years, and recently celebrated his 90th birthday.



The opening concert will feature Noam Sheriff’s Music for woodwinds, trombone, piano and double-bass, conducted by Lahav Shani. The second movement of the work was written for, and dedicated to, Ray Parnes.



“I’m very excited that you’re opening the season with this piece, which brings back a lot of memories of the work and of Noam, who was very dear to me. I met him when I was 18, when he was Assistant Conductor of the IDF Orchestra, and we immediately had chemistry. He appreciated my playing and my singing.

This part of the work was created to show all the abilities of the trombone, to play and sing with the instrument, both heroically and a little comically.”
