An original musical piece by Musicians Without Borders, “Farakhanda” is a dedication to an Afghani woman’s true story.
Farakhanda’s ambition was to become an Islamic religion teacher and had memorized the Qur’an by heart. One day, as she passed by a mosque, Farakhanda witnessed the performance of some witchcraft on some women by one of the protectors of the shrine who claimed to do this in the name of Islam. When she asked him to stop, she was accused of betraying the religion and was then beaten, burnt and thrown into the Kabul River. This song is a dedication to Farakhanda’s bravery… and to the thousands of other women sharing similar stories.
