The River Caul Bourne has its source in the Chalk Downs of the Isle of Wight and flows for 4 kms across the Tertiary sands and clays before entering The Solent at its mouth in the Newtown National Nature Reserve.
There is a fine example of meander just below its confluence with the Sweetwater Brook. The river is in spate following heavy and continuous rainfall in December 2012, fed by springs pouring out where the exceptionally high water table meets the surface in the surrounding chalk downs.
Erosion is active on the concave slopes of the meandering river, forming a steep river cliff and undermining the wooden footbridge that carries the public footpath across the river.
Deposition is occurring on the gentler convex slip off slopes on the opposite bank.
In time a small ox-bow lake could form here as the 'neck' of the meander is breached by the erosive forces of the river.
