Volkswagen’s ID.7 pairs a 5-metre fastback body with an electric-first cockpit where the “IDA” digital assistant now taps the large-language-model power of ChatGPT for more contextual answers, route tips and even gift ideas. At 4 961 mm long the ID.7 sits at the upper end of the midsize (B-segment) class yet keeps drag to just 0.23 Cd thanks to a low nose, tapering roofline, sealed under-tray, aero-optimised wheels and flush door handles. Even the hatchback announced for 2024 stays close at 0.24, preserving efficiency while adding the wide tailgate European buyers have been waiting for.

Energy comes from a 77 kWh (net) lithium-ion pack positioned below the cabin, enabling up to 700 km WLTP in the rear-drive Pro S “long-range” trim. DC charging peaks at 210 kW, giving roughly 10-to-80 % in 25 minutes, and an 86 kWh pack is slated to follow for high-output dual-motor variants.

Inside, a 15-inch OLED centre display, augmented-reality head-up projection and a slim steering-column cluster replace the traditional dashboard. Capacitive sliders handle climate and audio, while haptic touch panels on the wheel manage ADAS settings. Continuous cloud services arrive via a Qualcomm SA8155P infotainment SoC and dual-SIM 5G modem.

IDA’s ChatGPT extension lets occupants phrase requests naturally, create new wake words and chain follow-up questions. If local speech modules cannot resolve a command, the system silently queries the model and returns a conversational reply, whether that means recommending a pharmacy en-route or adjusting ambient light to “starlight” with a single utterance.

ErgoActive seats with pneumatic bolsters, 14-way memory and neck-level heating join a panoramic electro-chromic roof and multi-zone “Smart Air” vents that sweep airflow via micro-actuators. The sedan supplies 532 L of luggage space, expanding under the floor for cables; the hatchback stretches capacity past 580 L with seats up.

Market deployment mirrors regional tastes: the notchback sedan is key for China and North America, built in Emden and Chattanooga with sportier bumpers and IQ.LIGHT matrix LEDs as standard, while the hatchback will be assembled in Emden for Europe. Launch pricing in Germany starts at €56 900; US figures will follow once local tax-credit eligibility is finalised.

Dynamic safety comes from ACC 4.0 with lane centring, automated lane change and urban assist up to 210 km/h. The skateboard battery lowers the centre of gravity, and a revised rear motor (APP550, 210 kW peak) improves torque density for 0-100 km/h in about 6 s. Software-defined architecture means further efficiency, infotainment and AI refinements will arrive throughout the model cycle by OTA.
