Preface to Second Piano Symphony “Sinfonia Eclettica”, op. 41 in F-sharp minor

I composed this piece between the fifth and the eighteenth of May, 2024. I can’t believe that in the past five months I’ve composed three sonatas and two piano symphonies. I’m gonna write some small pieces after I publish this to give myself a break from committing to such large projects.

Sinfonia Eclettica was mildly an experiment: What if I just did what I wanted during the compositional process? As a result, the work is very chaotic, like me, and has rapid emotional changes, also like me. As the title, translated into English as Eclectic Symphony, would imply, I took inspiration from a wide variety of sources. I was influenced by Baroque counterpoint, Beethoven, romanticism, Mahler, impressionism, minimalism, atonality, polytonality, Stravinsky, jazz, Yoshimatsu, and probably more.

Anyways, Sinfonia Eclettica is in four movements, in the usual pattern: Allegro, Adagio, Allegro vivace, and Allegro appassionata. The outer movements are both in standard sonata form, the second is a hybrid of sonata and rondo form (but it isn’t sonata-rondo form), and the third movement is a scherzo with two trios. All movements are in the tonic key of F-sharp minor except for the second, which is in A minor, ending on a Picardy third. Despite being nearly half an hour shorter than my Piano Symphony op. 25, this piece is only about fifty measures shorter. The movements are a lot more proportionate, too, durating sixteen, twelve, nine, and thirteen minutes respectively. In this piece I did a lot of things that I’ve never done before, including not repeating the exposition (in the first movement), writing two trios (third movement), switching tempi semi-regularly (in the first movement), and some other things too. I’m also growing quite fond of ending in a minor
