Canterbury Bankstown Garden Waste

City of Canterbury Bankstown was one of the new LGAs formed in May 2016 from the state council mergers, in this case seeing the amalgamation of neighbouring City of Canterbury and City of Bankstown in the Sydney western suburbs. A fun fact is that today the City of CB is the largest NSW council by population! This location was the most recent to see changes occur as part of merged waste management, with updated collection arrangements officially coming into effect on 1st March 2021, including different service providers and service day zones. Previously and still at present, there has been a mix of contractors and council day labour performing collections, only nowadays everything has been streamlined across the two former council areas. Today a large in-house operation is responsible for all garbage and recycling collections, JJ Richards has been appointed to conduct all garden organics bin pick ups and SUEZ has been contracted to handle all booked bulk waste clean-ups.

The council has been a dedicated user of MacDonald Johnston Iveco trucks and nothing has changed with this, seeing them source latest model Bucher Iveco collection vehicles to look after the additional Canterbury workload. While SUEZ has procured a group of Superior Pak Merc Econic rear loaders, JJ’s Waste & Recycling (the company rebranded recently) has of course gone with a group of Volvo side loaders. For a few years now, JJ’s has chosen the Volvo FE cab chassis to replace the ACCO side loader option they bought for many years almost religiously. No surprise they have thrown on their own compactor body and bin lifter as is normal, with this one being one of their more recent standard duty body configurations. Richards is just about to have more Volvo side loaders in Sydney than Ivecos, with new units also already working in Burwood and Hawkesbury, as well as a large introduction in progress for the new Liverpool contract due to start shortly.

Again in April just gone, I made an early morning stop in this central region of Sydney on a Wednesday at sunrise, parking my ute in the suburb of East Hills in the south-west corner of the council. I caught up with unit #2024 which is 1 of 8 trucks the company has put to work for CB City garden waste collections. This modern machine along with the others was still quite fresh at the time of video, being only about 7 weeks young into fulltime service throwing on the various 240L green lid bins. One thing I was curious about with the new fleet was the signage that would be slapped on the truck bodies, and sadly what you see on this truck is exactly what is seen on every other truck doing waste services in CB City, so it doesn’t get much more boring and repetitive. On a different note, I’m happy to mention the young professional driving this truck is a member of the YouTube garbage trucks community; SitaEnvironmental might ring a bell for the earlier users =D
