Spanish nationality will be revoked for in June 2025
In 2025, Spain implemented a mechanism for reviewing nationalities granted through non-native means, a measure that could affect thousands of people who acquired citizenship through residence, choice, or naturalization. The goal is to combat fraud , detect irregularities, and strengthen oversight of naturalization processes.This legal change not only creates uncertainty among those who recently obtained Spanish nationality, but also marks a shift in the country's immigration policy . In 2023 alone, more than 240,000 people were naturalized , and the number in 2024 is expected to surpass that record.The review will affect exclusively those who are not Spanish by origin , that is, those who have acquired Spanish nationality through administrative procedures. The main cases considered by the Ministry of Justice are:Those who maintain their previous nationality and use it regularly for three years without having expressed their desire to retain Spanish nationality to the Civil Registry may lose it. This measure excludes citizens of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, and Portugal.Enlisting in foreign military service or holding a political office in another country without prior authorization from the Spanish government are explicit grounds for losing nationality. These actions are considered incompatible with national interests.If a person is found to have concealed information, submitted false documentation, or committed fraud during the application process , an administrative case will be opened. A final court ruling may result in the permanent revocation of Spanish nationality.What will be the procedure for revoking Spanish nationality?The loss of nationality will not be automatic . The procedure will be handled as an individual administrative file , in which the affected party may present arguments and evidence in their defense.The Ministry of Justice has clarified that each case will be analyzed individually, respecting the right to defense and the timeframes established by law. This general audit will be carried out gradually, with priority given to cases where there are already indications of non-compliance.there are legal mechanisms for regaining Spanish nationality , although the process depends on several requirements. According to current regulations, those eligible to apply for reestablishment are those who meet the following requirements:
Legally reside in Spain , except for exceptions applicable to emigrants or descendants of Spaniards.
Declare before the Civil Registry the desire to regain nationality.
Register again in the Civil Registry corresponding to your current address.Furthermore, the Ministry of Justice may grant an exemption in exceptional cases, such as when the applicant has carried out activities relevant to the country or the Spanish community abroad.
