Also called the Trottatore Italiano, the Italian Trotter is mainly used for trotting but can be known to excel in other equestrian sports as well. They are a result of an intense process of cross breeding.
The breed originates during the 19th century when trotting races came into popularity worldwide. The breeds used were English Thoroughbreds, American Trotters as well as Russian & Norman trotters. The resulting animals were strong and balanced and are considered among the best trotters in the world.

The Italian Trotter, Italian: Trottatore Italiano, is the Italian breed of trotting horse. It has been selectively bred exclusively for its racing ability. Varenne, one of the most successful trotters in the history of the sport, was an Italian Trotter.
The first trotting races in the Italian peninsula were held in the Prato della Valle of Padova (which at that time was in the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy) from 1808, some two years after the earliest official races at New Haven, Connecticut, in the United States. Selection of the Italian Trotter did not begin until the second half of the nineteenth century, when mares with aptitude for trotting were put to English Thoroughbred stallions.
The first notable Italian trotting horse was Vandalo, foaled in Ferrara in 1862. A genealogical stud-book was opened in 1896. The stud-book is closed – only horses born to registered parents can be registered; however, trotters registered elsewhere can sometimes be admitted if their racing record is exceptional.
The most celebrated Italian Trotter is Varenne, foaled in 1995, who raced in seven countries, won 61 of his 73 races, and whose winnings of over €6 million are thought to be a record.
The Italian Trotter has been selectively bred exclusively for its racing ability, particularly over short (1600–1660 m) and medium (2060–2100 m) distances; races over longer distances are no longer common in Italy.  There is no breed standard or morphological requirement of any kind. The most common coat colours are bay, chestnut and black.
Europe's sole albino Italian Trotter foal, who was born in a stud farm at the foot of the Basilica of St.Francis of Assisi, will be called Via Lattea (Milky Way), breeders announced Monday.
The foal, who was born April 4, is unique in Europe, experts said.
Her color came as a total surprise to the vet and his helpers as she emerged, since her dam Melodias and sire Gruccione Jet are both reportedly "pitch-dark". Her name was chosen by Danilo Reverberi, a Franciscan friar and friend of owner Sergio Carfagna. "I named her after the constellation, because its stars are as white and shining as her coat," said Reverberi, who is in charge of naming all newcomers to Carfagna's farm.
"Also it starts with a V, as per regulations for all racehorses born in 2014".
Via Lattea is the only known white specimen of this breed in Europe, experts said. Her name was announced at the launch of a book titled La Scuderia dei Miracoli (The Miracle Stable), the proceeds of which will go to protect horses destined to be slaughtered.
